Some people say it should give you little to no carcinogens, because the stuff is heated rather than burned. Others say it'll give you just as much carcinogens as if it had been burned (i.e. like a cigarette) because it's hot enough to turn the chemicals harmful. Also, since the smoke is more pleasant than cigarette smoke, people will do it longer, which could mean they take in more toxic smoke than a regular smoker.
If that was a wonky-sounding explaination it's because I just woke up and didn't feel like quoting Wikipedia. Just for the record, i'm neither for or against smoking so don't take it as me bashing hookah or smoking in general.
