You know the movie Gangs of new York? Its a fictional story based on the nonfiction book The Gangs of New York.

About 10 years ago, PBS ran a miniseries called The Irish in America that went into organized crime in NYC.

In his book, How the Irish Saved Civilization, Thomas Cahill brushes on it.

This is not a new subject that was only brought up because of an over dramatic Scorsese film.
