Actually, this band does carry quite a bit of emotion, and they were going so off the wall that they jus kept falling back into their cabs or hitting their guitar necks on things.

Dillinger Escape Plan intentionally breaks guitars. I hate them for it, but love them so......

To address a couple of things:

Maybe I'm biased, because they are the best fucking band EVER, but my favorite live show was Mr. Bungle.

As far as TOOL and GWAR go, one thing or another ruined both of these for me.

TOOL was playing VooDooFest in New Orleans, and they looked like they were doing it just for the paycheck. Most bands get into it, Tool just stood there. Not even any videos or anything showing behind them, like Tool is famous for.

GWAR was fucking excellent, but the crowd itself ruined it for me. You see, I don't know who decided that this was brilliant booking, but they had GWAR opening for ICP?!?
The wigger kids kept booing and throwing shit, just making it a miserable experience.

Out of the concerts I've been to, GWAR would have to be the most entertaining. Getting drenched with "blood" sure beats the stone prescence of Depeche Mode. Billy Idol put on an amusing show, with the throngs of women running onstage and Billy putting their heads in his crotch...

Dimmu Borgir are only superficially black metal. If you want to understand what BM is, buy Ulver's Nattens Madrigal.

I think with Nattens Madrigal Ulver was trying to make a statement. It is ridiculus how black metal elitists (the bands) intentionally use shitty producing on their albums simply because the founders of black metal could not afford quality producing. So to protest this he took the idea of shitty production to the EXTREME. The album was recorded somwhere in the woods even.

Garm challeneged the black metal community's definition of black metal with arcturus and drove the point home with Ulver. Garm's vision, I think, is that music should not have borders. Even music within a strict genre can vary greatly from band to band so why plaster on misleading labels?

Most BM bands use production according to the structure of the music, from my experiences. The more sophisticated ones tend to go for cleaner production, while rawer sounding ones go for...well, raw production. Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse was a better produced one, despite the poor mixing. Compare that with Darkthrone's Transylvanian Hunger. No, I don't think it's necessary to use bad production, but if they use it in a way that gives it a unique or effective sound, more power to 'em.

LOL on the BM history class. I urged BC to check out said record, simply because it DOES encapture the essence of norw. harsh black metal than anything else I've ever heard, without being completely stupid in the process. Which says ALOT in a black metal context. The 'symolism' behind the production or 'what does the artist mean' do not interest me in the least, if they are not evident.

how could you appreciate bad producing?
I mean when the recording is WORSE than how the band sounds live... whats the point unless the band plays like shit live?

I think System of a Down does a good show. They do alot of songs that aren't on CD at their concerts.

So helm the essence of norse black metal is shitty sound quality?
I believe that it is the superficial gimick that drives the elitist mentality. The music is about the music, not the other superficialites some bands use (ie. corpse paint).

Once again, I do agree that it's all about the music, but the examples I gave are records in which the production was good/bad in order to enhance the feel of the songs, much like countless hardcore bands that want analog recording rather than digital. It's hard for me to put into words as it's mainly a feeling. If you listen to them and compare the styles and production quality, you'll see what I mean.
