I suspect you are joking, but the US pretty much went into a "welfare state", after Franklin Roosevelt using deficit spending to bring the US out of the Great Depression era.

i was talking about the fact that the original poster of the thread was from canada, so culturecamp's "we" was a bit irrelevant since i'm fairly sure he's originally from the US
