It's actually quite simple. Politics is Advertising or Sales. The product is politicians. Purchasing is mandatory, and choice of product is pretty much up to everybody but you. Just like Coca Cola, the product itself rarely changes (like becoming more healthy for you,) but the advertising message is modified continually to keep you interested.
