This is the sort of highly individual, extremely thorny ethical knot that attracts massive public attention and is easily exploited by people and groups both some of which seek to forward their own highly charged agendas and some of whom seek to create bread and circuses to distract and delight the masses. Terry Schiavo, writ large.
Soon someone will 'out' this family and the hospital and this admittedly agonizing question will be used and abused a Jillion different ways.
I have no opinion on this. I am in no position to have an opinion on this, and acquiring a meaningful opinion on it would take a great deal of research and soul searching that realistically, I'm not going to do. With the exception of her family, her doctors, and serious, devoted ethicists of whatever stripe, I would say this holds true for everyone.
Not that this isn't worth thinking about and caring about, of course it is, but there are many, many many subjects worth vigorous national debate and legislation that deserve the focus and effort that I believe will be lavished on this one, highly individual case.
