Your aprehension towards the forward of a book is understandable, since most truly do suck, and often they are that scholars attempt to show how smart they are, like intellectual masturbation.
I think Pynchon does a great job, and presents a very creepy yet human face to Mr. Orwell. I actually got chills reading this, because placing '1984' into a modern context is always a frightening prospect.
