Okay I've made the group public but also promoted all forum regulars to officer status so we're set apart from any strangers () that join as a result of the group being public.
Permissions are not full but you can kick people from the group/chat, post announcements and create events. If anyone is seen to be abusing these things I'll demote them to a regular member.
