They released that in 2006 in Europe only. They perform final assembly of the American cars in Ohio, while the European cars are made in the UK (thats why you got it cheap there). I would imagine their Ohio plant hasn't paid off enough yet to warrant tearing the machines apart and changing them, which costs hundreds of millions of dollars to do. Theres also the fact that the new body style can't possibly pass American crash standards as the front bumper is way to high.
I've also heared that "they" say that Americans don't like hatchbacks. "They" base this on the decline of sales during the SUV craze of the late 90's.
