Probably OK for some disciplines, but for the sciences (my experience, nearly exclusively) you really need other individuals to bounce ideas around. It's getting easier to do online, what with teh internets, but there's still no substitute for the good old-fashioned study group. Plus you get to split the cost of the pizza & beer. Bonus.

I don't know, does psychology qualify as a science, or as a humanity? If the latter, you may be OK with online courses, as Ms. Asila suggests above.
