You finish Dutch and rescue John's family, only to find out that they're a bunch of ungrateful simpletons, including a heretofore unmentioned lazy uncle. Then you have to endure the soul-crushing tedium of leading a normal life after your life of adventure ends. The worst was that ride to Bonnie's ranch with your wife nagging you the whole time. And when you leave, Bonnie gives that longing look because she knows as well as the player that it would've been better if John had never gotten his family back. And once John has been thoroughly beaten and humiliated with menial ranch work, the army comes and he's just so beaten down that he gives up and walks into a hail of bullets. And the icing on the cake: you have to play as his shitty, cheap-looking Johnny Depp knockoff of a son. Boo, Rockstar, boo. You were supposed to put all those endgame missions at the beginning so the players would have even the slightest interest in rescuing John's family. Hell, they ran like tutorial missions anyway.

After I beat the game I couldn't help but feel as if the whole point of it was to introduce a new character for a sequel.

The point is you pretty much finish the game after killing Dutch. It's just too bad we didn't know that so we could have a save handy. You can't even switch outfits after starting the Ranch bs. I'm a fan of bold story moves like that though when it comes to completion of a story it's just that most authors usually finish the story before or right when the hero rides into the sunset. Rockstar didn't seem to care about that and instead did a 360 to introduce Jack. Your son Jack is a bitch, rancher life was boring and your family are all bitches then you die and the cycle repeats. Jack could be developed. I mean, most of us were quite stupid at his age so I can get over his early development.
