I think it has to do with medium changing, as well. You don't have to go to a shop anymore to find something new. There are plenty of webcomics out there, if one is so inclined.

I don't really fit into the mold of a guy who reads comic books. I buy a copy of Heavy Metal Magazine occasionally because I'm interested in seeing things I've never seen before. I like art. I've got an assload of art books taking up space on my coffee table and in my closet. But picking up a new issue of a comic from a store, if I can even find one? It's troublesome.
