Casual readers used to be a big audience in comics as well. While they were serialized, comics could be jumped into at any issue. Nowadays if you haven't been following for 100 issues, you don't know what's going on.

Webcomics certainly are changing the game. When an average Webcomic can get audiences in the millions, but their paper counterparts can only get 10,000 if they're lucky.
