Plague has been in the California mountains for like ever. I remember when I was in school watching a news story (because my Medical Anthropology professor was a lazy bastard and didn't lecture, just made us watch tapes of whatever medical stories were in the news) of a marmot or something that bit a schoolteacher's cat and gave her pneumonic plague somehow.
