I think they made a few episodes to try and suggest that "from South-America, Ma-Ti, with the power of Heart" had some kind of purpose in the team, but we all knew better. The only reason they even let him tag along was because if they didn't, Captain Planet would emerge like a robot bent on destruction instead of a crystalline fruit.

This must've been one of the most politically correct cartoons ever.

That's why I hated it. so fucking much.

And the only reason they kept Ma-Ti around, was because he controlled that little monkey.
