I vote for confidence, too. Confidence and casualness. Don't say or act like you really like a girl, act like you're doing her a favor by talking to her (and this can be done without being or seeming like an asshole, too). And set your standards so high that no female can intimidate you--that way, you'll never be shaken.

If all else fails, I say go ahead and push her in the mud. At the very least, it'll be funny.
