Old Jun 26th, 2004, 08:50 AM        my view on music
I rarely buy CD's. I've heard all the music from the past and sometimes I want to go back and re-live it but at an inflated cost that pisses me off to no extent. For a year now I have been listening to bands on Garageband.com or Soundclick.com and I think this is the future of music. I was listening to the radio and they mentioned that some band CDs will have a new protection preventing you from burning an MP3 (the new one with the STP singer). Now it's going to be that you spend $20 for a CD that you own and you can't transfer it to an MP3 I don't go to Kazaa anymore and I'm thinking of trying one of these pay as you go but is this going to dissapear in a few years because the commercial bands don't want to have people download there songs? even from a legitamate paying site?

Don't spend twenty bucks for a CD, dipshit.

Major label new releases are $14 on Amazon.com and probably at Target, too.

Metal Blade sells new releases for $10.99.

Century Media sells new releases for $12.00.

Classical music CDs are still well under $10 each in most cases.

Current copyright laws have limited or no provisions for royalties via paid downloads. Bands and especially songwriters get stiffed when people pay for music online instead of buying CDs.

You can go into any dollar store and buy classical music for about 4 dollars on CD, and sometimes 50 cents on tape.

You will always be able to get free music from now on because of the Internet. If the noise comes out of your speakers, you can record it again and turn it into an MP3; instant copy protection destruction.

Fuck bands.

achimp's right. just rip it the same way you'd rip a cassette or a record. or just listen to bands who wouldn't dream of trying to prevent mp3 ripping in the first place. do you really think there will be that many good albums put out by the major labels in the coming years?

I haven't purchased a CD in years, nor do I plan to anytime soon.

I believe Fartin is referring to the cost of the CD being $20 CAD which is pretty much the average here. But anybody that purchases one of these copy-protected CD's is a fucking fool - send a message with your dollar that you're not going to pay for a defective product.

i read something about the shit they might start puttin on the cd's. but i think all it is is a reminder not to rip them / burn copies of them. i have no doubt that this will not prevent / change anything from happening.

exactly. Just like that CSS key bullshit they tryed pulling to prevent DVD copying.

Some group of elite nerds will crack that shit. Theres really nothing that any company can do to prevent pirating.

This is the first time that I will hesitate to buy a product like a MP3 player. I think the CD will be dead mainly because I remember there wonderful super CD that never transpired. That to me probably meant that there will be much better quality forms of file transfering music (super wave?) and that will most likely mean that some companies are scrambling to protect it this time so we can't download it.

You can skip the mp3 blocking software they have if you just hold down the shift key when you put the CD in.

The way it does it is that it has the autorunner on the CD install something on your computer that prevents you from being able to rip it. But isn't that illegal? :/
